Dr. Teresa E.S. Berry
What inspires me about Bryan Stevenson’s work is the fact that he fights for equality for the poor and tries to create a greater fairness in the criminal justice system to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality. All while showing mercy by getting proximate with each disenfranchised families he represents. Always maintaining strong character and courage in the face of outrageous circumstances which not only effect the families he represents but his own life and family.
I decided to join the Bryan Stevenson School of Excellence because I wanted to do something to change the environment of the area I live in. Being a teacher you make an impact on hundreds of students, as an administrator the impact is even greater but the goal was to touch a whole community and I felt opening a school would made a lasting impact on the larger community. After reading “Just Mercy” and seeing what the vision of one person in small Sussex County could do I felt a tugging of my heart to do my part to help make a change in the community in which Bryan grew up in and the one in which I live.
My hopes for the students and families of Sussex County Delaware is that we may plant a seed with a vision for greatest as the seed was planted for Bryan. Thought a service -learning focused school that our students will have the opportunity to set proximate and share mercy for the work that is needed to be done to make our community one of the best in the state of Delaware and graduating students who are visionary people who understand the community in which they live and are able to create and for fill jobs needed to advance society and a whole and the entire world.
